Articulate Storyline Course

Course explainer video [1 min 19 sec]

Development Tools: Articulate Storyline 360, Articulate Review 360, Vyond, Canva Magic AI Image Generator, ElevenLabs AI Voiceover Generator

Year: 2024

Development Time: 100 hours

Responsibilities: Needs Analysis, Visual Design, Storyboarding, Content Development, Prototyping, AI-Based Image and Voiceover Creation, Project Management

Client: MENTOR Vermont

Collaborators: Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Training Director

Summary: A 30-minute eLearning course in Articulate Storyline, featuring AI-generated images and voiceovers, along with two custom animations designed in Vyond.

Challenge: The visual design was challenging due to the client’s color palette. I had to use 6 colors from the MENTOR Vermont brand book, each with a shade, plus additional course theme colors (pink and purple), totaling 14 colors. The design also needed to include a drawing of a unicorn (using the third-party Gender Unicorn Tool), rainbows, playful fonts, and other visuals that appeal to youth culture.
From an instructional standpoint, designing a course on identity presented the challenge of avoiding a purely informational approach in favor of developing meaningful skills.

Solution: To move beyond passive information sharing, I collaborated with stakeholders to align the course with Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction, focusing on a task-centered design. To meet visual design expectations, the course took the form of a vibrant youth comic book using bright colors and playful fonts to reflect mentees’ culture.

Results: Stakeholders were 100% satisfied with the course’s unique visual design and the cohesive look achieved across assets created using Canva, Storyline, and Vyond. The consistent style delivered a seamless and engaging learning experience.

Challenge: Tight deadlines and limited resources required a fast-paced development process without compromising interactivity or engagement.

Solution: To meet tight timelines, the course was primarily developed in Articulate Rise for its speed and ease of use. To boost engagement, a custom-built Storyline activity was added, enabling learners to actively apply their knowledge through a type-in interaction.

Results: Strategic selection and integration of development tools reduced course development time by 50%, while maintaining high quality and ensuring on-time project delivery.

Course Storyboard

Development Tools: Google Slides, Canva

Year: 2024

Development Time: 20 hours

Responsibilities: Storyboarding, Needs Analysis, Instructional Design, Scripting, Visual Design, Content Development, Project Management

Client: MENTOR Vermont

Collaborators: Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Training Director

Summary: A 61-slide storyboard outlining key elements for stakeholder approval, including scripts, sound effects, navigation and interactivity, accessibility considerations, and visual layouts, designed in alignment with the client’s style guide.

Challenge: Sourcing vibrant images for the storyboard was challenging due to the Statement of Work requirements (incorporating 14 colors, illustrations of a unicorn, rainbows, and children) while still maintaining a cohesive design.

Solution: Using Canva Magic AI for image generation streamlined the creative process, enabling the production of visuals that met all complex requirements.

Results: AI image generation saved 80% of the time typically spent sourcing, creating, or customizing visuals for the online course. The resulting storyboard clearly communicated the training design and fully met stakeholder expectations.

Challenge: Learners often struggle to find engaging, accessible, and reliable educational content online, especially on platforms like TikTok, where information is frequently unverified and rarely grounded in adult learning principles, as it’s not created by instructional design experts.

Solution: Rumie addresses this gap by offering engaging, expert-reviewed Bytes — short, high-quality microlearning lessons designed by professional instructional designers and, when needed, reviewed by Subject Matter Experts to ensure accuracy.

Results: I published Bytes to the Rumie Learn Library, boosting learner engagement with concise text, visuals, and interactivity, while improving content quality by aligning with high-traffic learning objectives, integrating editorial feedback, and collaborating closely with volunteer learning designers.

Explainer Video Script

Animation Based on Script: Procedural Skill Training [2 min 57 sec]

Development Tools: Google Docs

Year: 2023

Development Time: 2 hours

Responsibilities: Scripting, Content Development

Client: Portfolio

Collaborators: Independent work

Summary: A 3-page script for an online course explainer video, including narration and corresponding visual material.

Challenge:  The Statement of Work required a video tutorial from the SME, but they were unavailable to record it before the deadline.

Solution: Instead of a recorded video of the SME speaking, I proposed a concise animated explainer. The detailed script ensured the animation was clear, engaging, and easy to follow, eliminating the need for the SME’s direct involvement while still meeting the project requirements.

Results: By transitioning to animation and leveraging the script, I met the approved deadlines and delivered the project on time. The script streamlined development, ensuring a smooth and delay-free process.

Gamified Onboarding

Development ToolsCanva, Slack Workflow Builder

Year: 2022

Development Time: 2 hours
Responsibilities: Needs Analysis, Instructional Design, Scripting, Technology Integration

Client: Portfolio

Collaborators: Independent work

Summary: A 5-step online quest, delivered automatically via Slack DMs when a new learner joins the course community, was designed as part of the onboarding process.

Challenge: Learners new to Slack may face challenges using the platform effectively for peer interaction and assignment completion.

Solution: By introducing a gamified onboarding quest on Slack, I guided new learning community members through platform essentials while fostering connection through a fun, interactive experience. Each step was designed to build confidence in using Slack and encourage early engagement with peers and course content from day one.

Results: Designing the onboarding as a Slack-based quest led to a completion rate of over 85%, fostering a more engaged and active course community. This approach also contributed to higher learner retention and improved course completion rates.

More information about the project is available in my Medium blog post linked here.

Instructional Design Document (IDD)

Development ToolsGoogle Doc

Year: 2024

Summary: A 9-page instructional design document structured around the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate), used to track progress, assign tasks, and support decision-making throughout the project.

Challenge: Managing a complex project was difficult due to stakeholders being spread across time zones, juggling busy schedules, and collaborating across multiple platforms, including Google Workspace, Canva Teams, and Articulate Review.

Solution: I created a project hub in the form of an instructional design document that included:

Problem scenario video. Part 2 [43 sec]

Development Tools: Vyond

Year: 2022

Development Time: 4 hours

Responsibilities: Needs Analysis, Storytelling, Scripting, Visual Design, Content Development

Client: Portfolio

Collaborators: Independent work

Summary: Two 40-second Vyond animations introduce a problem scenario, serving as an activation exercise at the start of the online course to engage learners and contextualize upcoming content.

Challenge: Capturing learners' attention early in an online course and clearly communicating the topic's importance and complexity can be difficult.

Solution: When learners see the value of the skills they’re building, they stay engaged and motivated, leading to better outcomes. Instead of simply explaining the issue, I introduced a real-world scenario to highlight its relevance and impact.

Results: Interviews with learners showed that 100% found the problem scenario and activation of prior knowledge through video helpful for staying motivated and progressing effectively through the course.
